Or something similar like skype or any VOIP phone?

Like if you are getting harassing calls from a VOIP number, are the cops able to put a tap on the internet/voip line, or no?

  1. Cops don't do it. The company does then gives the information to the cops who then tell you only if you agree to prosecute.

  2. I dont know, but if you want to know if it is physically possible, dont you think one of the technology boards would be more appropriate than the law board?

    Try one of these boards

  3. I don't really know much about this but I looked it up cause I wanted to know the answer once I saw your question:)

I found this article about tapping vonage/other net phones and what problems the govt runs into.Basically it looks like they can tap some providers phones relatively easily and run into either technological (ie encryption on skype, etc) problems or warrant problems with others.

Hope that helps a little- its an interesting question:)

edit-- the article explains the techy stuff involved in the tapping too.

  4. Check with your phone company.

Phone taps usually require search warrants (which the police won't bother with unless it's a major crime).
