How do the powers of Senators and Representatives differ?

Can someone explain why we have both, how they differ.

  1. 100 senators, 6 year terms; 435 representatives, 2 year terms.

    Senators were originally appointed by the states, representatives elected directly by the voters. Sort of a balance or power that was abandoned when the senators became directly elected.

    Certain types laws can be initiated only in senate, others only in house, but most can be initiated in either. Senate confirms, supreme court justices, cabinet members, ambassadors, and treaties. Senate tries the president for impeachment.
