How do the ratings work on YouTube?

You know how after a video you were watching is finished, YouTube shows you a bunch of related videos and their ratings, cycling through them 2 per page? It also says their rating in stars. Well, say it shows it as having 4 stars...when I click it to go watch it, i see it only has 3 or so. Those ratings are pretty much always wrong.. are they how it was last rated by someone or something? Because they often dont match the real rating once you click the video

  1. Well if someone rates a video 5 stars and someone else rates the same video only 1 star the video is going to look like this

    3 stars


  2. yeah im not sure. that happens to me. i see a 5star vid and it turns out to be a 3 star
