  1. I'm not sure they do; certainly there are a lot of things that have much more effect than who they address them.

    One can have great emotional closeness to someone they address somewhat formally; none with someone they've learned to address with a gooey name.


  2. I think that the way you use terms can definitely impact the relationship they have with those relatives. You can have a "father" or you can have a "dad." A "father" is not one you can mess around with, but you can have fun with a "dad" same goes with mother.

    You can also keep a Grandparent at arms length by referring to them as Grandpa/ma + their given name.
