I have an old one and the green on one end is on the left and the red on the right. It's opposite on the other end of the wire.Does it matter if you switch the two? I only have one 4 prong connector and I need to get it right. Thanks

  1. It is usually ring, right, red but in you case just hook it up.  You can't hurt anything.  Then check to see if you can call out.  If you can, don't do anything.  If you can't call out, reverse the wires.

Only two wires are used on the four prongs, the other two date back to the days before light emitting diodes on the phones.  They were used to power the lights on the phone.

  2. modern phone devices do not care what the polarity of the wiring is, if you connect it "backwards" it should not affect your line..

    red>red

    green>green

yellow/black are for a second line...

  3. Just connect the red to the red and the green to the green, it doesn't matter which is on the left and which is on the right as long as the same colors are used on both ends. The yellow, black are used for a second line. Visit the site below, it has useful information about phone lines.
