Question:

How do they check your passport at the airport?

I am a US citizen and am currently staying in Italy. I know I am only allowed to stay here for 90 days thanks to the Schengen Law but I want to stay longer. My question is how do they check your passport at the airport? Unless I am caught by police here in Italy how will they know I'm still here? If I do happen to return to the US after 90 days of being in Italy, will I get in trouble when I return to the US when I go through immigration/passport check? I would imagine they would let me back into my home country if I wasn't allowed to be in the one I just came from (Italy). Also, when I'm flying within Italy will they know I have been here for more than 90 days? I know they look at my passport to confirm my name but I don't know what else they do. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Lastly, if I am stopped by the carabinieri/police checkpoint (like on the road), will they run my passport number for information?

  1. That depends.  Sometimes they will check the date stamped on your passport others don't care.  They will not deny you entry into the US as you are an American Citizen, but the can deny you future entry into Italy.  If you want to stay longer then 90 days you need a different passport, which is how nanny's, and any one else can stay longer.  I have dual-citizenship with Italy, so I don't have that problem.

  2. nobody cares, stay how much u want

  3. When you leave Italy they will look at the date stamped on your visa.  If you have overstayed, you will be barred from re-entering Italy in the furture.  You need to read the info under "Entry requirements" at the site below.  You can prevent problems by following instructions there.
