How do they chose the hole for sudden death in golf? Why was the 7th hole used on Monday's US Open?

  1. they used the 7th, 10th and 18th for the playoffs.  I think that was predetermined a long time ago.


  2. The "T" was close to the green of the 18th.  The decisions of which hole to use was made before the event started, just like the hole locations for the 18 hole playoff.

  3. Often for the playoff they use a truncated version of the course. This is one where the tees and greens are in proximity to one another and one where the best TV can be shown. They do this to limit the additional walking and make it easier for the fans to follow the action. The holes for a playoff are predetermined prior to the tournament. This allows for the TV coverage to move equipment off holes that are not going to be used and to the key holes.
