Question:

How do they get airplanes to an airshow?

Do they just fly them from their normal "resting place", or do they drive them on a transport vehicle?

I would imagine the older airplanes would be driven there (like they do with nice classic cars at carshows), and the newer planes are just flown in.

What do you think? And, anyone have any resources on this?

  1. At most shows just about everything is flown there. even the "old" ones.

  2. Almost all aircraft are flown in, regardless of age.

This tends to be a problem when there is bad weather.  At my home airport in Maine, the annual airshow was plagued by bad weather for years in a row.   The older aircraft (DC-3s, B-17s, and the like) were kept from the show a couple of years, because they weren't certified or equipped to fly in the bad weather.

Trucking an aircraft would be quite the expensive ordeal to get it to an airshow, requiring the removal and re-attachment of the wings, and trucking of the aircraft cross-country for some shows.      While this is possible, usually the practice is reserved for extreme cases, such as when a plane is stranded and in need of maintenance that can only be provided elsewhere.

Next time there's an airshow in town, stop by the airport the day before.   The military guys tend to do a few flybys before they land.   Especially if it's a display team such as the Blue Angels, they will often practice their entire routine soon after flying in.

  3. they fly them on huge transport planes

  4. Flown in.

  5. Think about it a minute.  An air show, by definition, is a display of airplanes flying.  So all the airplanes that are in the show are able to fly.  So they fly them there.  That's why it's called an air show.

    Clear?  Thanks...

  6. Is this a serious question? That makes me wonder how cars get into parking lots.

  7. All of the airshows I have been to, the planes were flown in. I never noticed any of the smaller ones being trailored, as to take off the wings and make them ready for trailoring would be very time consuming and expensive. Trailoring is also hard on avionics and who knows what else I have been told.

  8. BD-5Js  and gliders are routinely trucked to the show because ot their short range, but everyone else typically flies in
