How do the people that have Baron or Baroness get those titles?

AND why do people have Esquire with their name?

  1. Barons and Dukes like all nobility get their titles from either lineage, or appointed by Thee current monarch.

    For example,

Charles Brandon was merely a commoner in the early 16th century. When he befriended King Henry VIII, he was given the title of "Duke of Suffolk".

When he married Mary Tudor, she became the Duchess of Suffolk.

When he had a son, Henry, he became the next Duke of Suffolk.

But, when Henry died with no children, the the dukedom went off to his sister, Lady Frances Brandon, Charles's daughter.

Frances later married Henry Grey, thus he became the Duke of Suffolk.

    Hope that explains everything.

  2. dukes are usually children or grandchildren of a monarch anything after that and it is no longer a royal title unless the line runs out of males then it reverts back to the crown a duchess is the wife of a duke and as far as i am aware it has never actually been givern to a woman without being wed. like with the dukedom of edingburgh when prince phillip dies rumor has it that the earl of wessex shall inherit the title and as he has a son when that happens his son shall automatically become the earl of wessex and so on but when james the viscount severn becomes earl wessex it will be if he chooses to actually take the style hrh then he shall be the last hrh earl of wessex in the line even if he has a son the style of hrh can not be givern to him

  3. Esquire means lawyer.

The other titles are usually inherited and have been held by the family for generations. These titles were granted for services rendered to the monarchy;the more things done to help the country, the higher the title.A woman may marry into a family with a title, but a man must inherit or earn it by doing something extraordinarily well. These titles are not granted often. Margaret Thatcher, a former Prime Minister, was made a baroness. One of the greatest actors of all times, Laurence Olivier was made a knight, then continued on with his awesome career, and was made an hereditary baron.

When people first get an honor,it's usually a knighthood that is granted. If a person continues to do extraordinary works, like Thatcher and Olivier, hereditary titles are then granted.Composers Andrew Lloyd- Webber and Tim Rice are other examples.

To clear up some errors submitted: there are two types of titled aristocracy, the royals and the gentry. There are Royal Dukes and Duchesses;a prince who is not heir maybe granted a royal dukedom. Prince Andrew,Duke of York is an example.Royal princes can also be granted other royal versions of marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. Some princes, like Prince Charles, automatically get these titles when they are heir apparent to the throne."On the accession of Queen Elizabeth in 1952, he became heir apparent to the throne. He also automatically became Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick and Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland." from http://www.royal.gov/uk/output/Page5567

Non-royal aristocrats such as a duke, who inherited the title also inherited lands called a duchy. These lands provided income and came with political responsibilities;the duke oversaw the lands for the monarch.Today, those people who inherited the title may have also inherited lands and an income from the lands as well.

  4. Baron (or Lord) and Baroness are nowadays normally Life Peers which means that the person has the right to sit in the House of Lords (please note that the wife of a Baron is a Lady, a Baroness is a peer in her own right). Technically the peerages are awarded by the Queen but she only acts on the recommendation of the Government.

A Duke (Dutch means from the Netherlands) is either the child or grandchild of a monarch (if they are a royal Duke and also have the title HRH) or they are descended from Dukes created many years ago (normally descended from Monarchy and in a lot of cases illegitimate children of Monarchs).

Esquire is used instead of putting Mr in front of a man's name. In the USA it's usually used to denote attorneys but in the UK it was used to denote men of "gentle birth" nowadays it refers to any man without another title.
