How do they get this extra flick on the foot (arabesque)

how do ballet dancers get this extra flick on their (lifted) foot/ankle? i dance and i wanna know how and why they do it.(the girl in the picture has just got a tiny flick).

  2. It's just practice , honestly if you keep practicing it will come to you  and it's called a winged foot ;). The reason why we do it is because ballet is all about creating lines  with our bodies .

    Then I would say all you need to do is point your toes. Ballet IS about making lines, as someone else already stated. Why do you think you need to wear pink tights and slippers? It creates a continuous line.
