How do they hook-up phone service through your cable?

Just wondering about that Vonage place. How is it they hook a phone up through your computer or cable?

Phone jack to the back of a modem for the cable phone and computer

I have it through VOIP.COM. It works great and it is only $199 per year for uunlimited long distance and all the other toys.
