  1. Your job history shows up on your credit report. Not you the copy an individual would order, but employers have access to that information.

  2. You provide references...your boss where you worked for example....

.....and they check. It only takes a phone call.

  3. They might check with former employers or maybe not.  But if you lie and are found out, they know they cannot trust you and would likely not hire you.

Why do people think that have to make up a story?  Just tell the truth.

  4. Lying on an application is a big mistake.  If this "adjustment" is found out, the potential employer may just disregard the entire application.

With the economy as it is, gaps in employment may be more common.  Whether a short gap, while someone is in between jobs, or a break occurs while someone takes extended time off for other, personal reasons, a gap in employment history does a LOT less damage than a lie, when caught.

An employer may like to see continuous employment at a previous job, indicating stability, but, most people who get laid off, for instance, don't immediately jump into another.  It takes time to find a good job.

  5. Employers may call previous employers to verify the dates you gave are correct. NEVER lie on an application. If you do and get caught you will not only be passed over for that job but most likely for all future positions at that company.

Instead of lieing explain the the gap. For example, was the gap due to the job search? It may take some people over a year to find a new position. Was the gap due to a move, staying at home with family (if this is the case don't state it that way. just say you took a year off).
