  1. They tell you it works and 90% of the punters out there believe it  !

  2. they do various tests on willing people

  3. They do small scale research on a survey of women and claim 80% of women noticed a change. Also they digitally enhance the woman's face (avon advert admitted to doing so on a mascara advert). They use complicated made up technical scientific language, they use language that trick you into thinking its amazing too.

  4. All these creams etc are rubbish! It makes me laugh to see people spending their hard earned cash on such wasteful things. They do a survey on about 100 people and say 70% of people agree that this product is fantastic, when a proper study would include thousands. If all those creams worked, wouldn't you see fantastic people everywhere and what would be the point of cosmetic surgery if the creams they used actually worked. It is a load of rubbish, don't waste your money.

  5. Because the products are "cosmetic" and not "therapeutic" They can make whatever claims they want and they don't have to worry about providing proof. The same testing and effacity standards don't apply to beauty products as they do to drugs and therapeutic remedies.  There are some companies that extensively test their products, use ingredients with known benefits to the skin and have real scientific research to back up their claims.  You might be surprised to hear that big expensive department store  and speciality brands are not the one using state of the art ingredients, it's actually less expensive drug store brands such as Olay, Neutrogena, and speciality brands like Avon.

If you want to know what works, what doesn't and what worth the price and what's all lies and exaggeration then invest in Paula Begoun's excellent book "Don't go Cosmetics Shopping Without Me"  She sorts through the hype, tells what works, and has product reviews for almost everything, including the very expensive and the very cheap.  Look for her "CosmeticsCop" website, she has lots of helpful links and articles.  Also her "beautypedia"  site has product reviews of many of the top drug and department store products.
