How do they make the baseball fields look like they are checkered, when the games are one?

The Lawn mowers they use have rollers on the bottom of them so when they cut the grass the the rollers give the grass the design

There are several things the grounds crew can do to create these patterns:

Grass grows with a natural light and dark side. Typically, the side that gets the most sunlight will be a deeper green color, and the side of the blade that gets less sun will be a lighter shade of green.

1. When they lay the sod, they place the squares in alternating directions. So they lay one piece with the dark side one way, then lay the next section with the dark side facing the other way. This method is not used as much because they don't lay new sod very often. (other than patching spots where the grass is torn up).

2. they can create patterns by mowing in certain directions. The direction of the mower will cause the grass to lay slightly one way, exposing either the dark side or the light side of the grass from different angles around the field.

3. This is the most common method: They use a special roller tool. Usually they drag it behind a mower (after they finish cutting the grass). This makes the grass lay a certain way, thus showing either the lighter or darker side of it. It works just like a comb that makes your hair lay a certain direction. By changing the directions that they rake the grass, they can create all the different patterns that you see on different fields.
