  1. They would drive a barrier into the lagoon floor and pump the water out from within. The builders would then drive wooden piles into the ground. The piles were like huge stakes and were placed very close together thus they failed to rot. The property was then built on the foundation of wooden piles and the barrier removed to let the water flow up to the entrance steps. There is a church on the Grand Canal that stands on over a million of these wooden piles.
