I realize that they go through the alphabet, and I believe that they alternate gender (Fay, Gustav) but how do they decide the names?

  3. They are named by the national hurricane center, and they have this question as one of their faqs: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/B1.ht...

Note that tropical cyclone is equivalent to hurricane (http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/A1.ht...

  4. The names of tropical cyclones around the world are decided in advance by a committee of the World Meteorological Organization, and the lists are compiled. The lists usually repeat after a certain number of years. Once in a while a storm gets its name retired because it was strong enough and/or damaging enough.
