  1. The "wire" inside a "curly" phone cord (it may have 2 or more conductors) is made of little flakes of metal coated on a string like fiber. This makes it very flexible. It is then wrapped with a cloth covering to insulate the 2 or more wires from each other. The outside coating (used as an insulation and to just protect the inside "wire") is made of plastic. When it is coiled up and heated, it retains its coiled shape.
