How do they retire hockey player numbers? ?

Can someone describe it? I was asked to write a piece about it to cheer up a friend of mine who's far away from home... but I have no clue what happens during a number retiring ceremony. Are there speeches, does the player stand on the ice? Anyone seen one?

    2. yea

    3. yea lots

  3. It's a ceremony, that usually takes place before a regular hockey game.

Usually the player and his family will stand at center ice. There are often speaches. A banner with the player's number on it is raised to the rafters of the building.

From that point forward, nobody on the team may use that number, unless it is "un-retired".

The number 99 is retired NHL-wide in honor of Wayne Gretzky.

  4. no

  5. well first it has be a dang good player to get his number retired.

then they hold a big ceremony before a random game

    lots of speeches and cheering

usually old teammates of the retiree come to congratulate him, this draws cheers as well

then the banner with his name and number goes to the rafters

I went to Danny Gare's and Pat LaFontaines ceremonies (happy to say that Patty's game was a big win VS TOR)
