How do tundras and wetlands release methane?

Hi I'm doing a global warming project and I want to know how tundras and wetlands give off methane. Please include where you got your information. THANKS!

  1. These environments possess organic matter that gets buried in an anoxic environment (no or very limited oxygen).  In the absence of oxygen, methane (CH4) is the ultimate decay product (rather than CO2).  Same reason buried waste in a landfill tends to produce methane.


  2. When the weather is warm the bacteria decompose plants and animals releasing methane.

    The tundras lock in the methane below the permafrost and release it when the frozen surface thaws.
