  1. with incredibly large sums of money.

a lot of people don't know that TV shows are created so you will have a reason to watch the commercials. the more interesting the shows, the less likely you'll change the channel during a commercial break and the bigger chance the magic of advertising will have an effect on you.

that's why networks compete for ratings and viewership. these commercials pay a ton of money for every second they're on the air. this money goes through the network system and proportionately find itself in the pockets of those involve.

Producers are fairly high up in the food chain.

  2. Producers are the people that actually create, control, cast and are generally running things.  In a very real sense, the show is their "product".  Making a show is a lot like a small business, in fact many productions actually form corporations.

The executive producers are also responsible for getting the money to pay the cast and crew (and themselves).  They have to sell the concept to a television network or group of investors.  This is why you see credits for "NBC Television Productions" or "King World" or the like at the end of the show.  One of my favorites is David Letterman's "World Wide Pants".  In this case, apparently Letterman is putting up a good chunk of his own money.  The idea here is that the Production House can in turn sell the show for a profit.

The TV Network, or investors (syndicators) will then air the show themselves or sell the rights for air to other stations who will in turn get advertiser support to cover the costs of airing.

So, as you can see, there is a lot of risk involved all the way up and down the chain.  But, that's how the business works.

  6. Shows get most, if not all, their money from advertisement revenue.

Some manage to make money off of products from the show.

  7. production houses are paid for airing their shows, it could be live or taped already. income comes from the sponsors/commercials. tv producers also got their basic salaries from the production house.

  8. Because the tv channel buys it off the company that made it.

  9. Part of advertising revenue and/or viewer paid fees for service.

I cant think of anywhere else the money might come from.

  10. Advertisers such as auto manufactures, candy companies, and soap companies pay for the advertisment time shown during the shows.  In fact soap commercials were the biggest sellers during shows like Days of our Lives hence they got the name "soap operas."
