How do u access your regular/external hard drive wirelessly?

Question

My teacher said that it is possible to access your hard drive or ur external hard drive wirelessly through the internet.... Which program does that? Not uploading files... i want my entire hard drive on the internet and then a password and username.. something like that.

So i leave my computer on, and then if i go to my friend's house, i can go on the internet/website and then access my hard drive/external and then play my own videos/music. Without uploading

i'm not totally clear on your question......

but you could use some sort of remote desktop application....like PC Anywhere ?

I just use Windows Remote Desktop when I need to acess my PC from anywhere.

Leaving it exposed to the internet is a serious risk to your security. also it is almost impossible to directly reliably connect as your IP address will be dynamic, which means it can change without warning. your best option is what major IT companies use a vpn (virtual private network). Depending on what you want to do there are 2 very simple ways to accomplish this. Both mean going to http://www.logmein.com on your own machine.

I use this company for my remote admin. There is a hamachi program, install this if you want file access. It then asks you to set up your network name etc. Once this is done you can go to logmein from anywhere on the internet. It allows you to use your files. The other option is to install the free logmein program. This allows total remote access to your own machine.
