  1. You pick a species you're interested in - do a ton of research to determine the ease of breeding, purchase a male and female, provide a healthy diet full of variety and protein, make sure your cage has ample room for both the two adult birds and any babies they successfully produce once fledged.

    Know what you plan on doing with the babies once they are weaned (keep, sell, trade, etc?) - and be sure to have extra space for the extra babies.

    Certain species of finches are better in terms of "beginners" if you're looking to start out breeding.

    These would be society finches, zebra finches, and sometimes spice finches.

    Anything else will probably be more on the level of difficult and be too frustrating for someone first starting out.

  2. I agree with nixity with a small addition. If you are going to try to breed finches then you need to purchase a book about the species that  you have. Read it a couple times.  You will still make mistakes. You will have the book as a reference manual. It takes lots of time to breed birds. You need to watch them so you know what  they are up to.
