To change "pool" to 9-ball, I assume you're shooting standard pool with all 15 balls.  Someone has the "solids" while the other has the "stripes" and who ever sinks all of their balls plus the 8-ball wins.

9-Ball is a version of "Rotation" in that all of the balls must be sunk (or at least, struck with the cue ball) in numerical order.  To play 9-ball, use only the balls 1 thru 9.  The object of the game is to play "Rotation" and sink the 9-ball which is usually worth a set amount of money.  Some variations allow the 5-ball to be worth a lesser amount of money as well.

The balls are racked in a diamond pattern with the 1-ball at the front and the 9-ball in the center.  If any ball is sunk on the break, the shooter continues his turn. If no balls are sunk on the break, it is the turn of the next shooter.

The cue ball MUST strike the lowest numbered ball on the table as in "Rotation", otherwise, it is a "scratch" and it is the next player's turn.  If the 9-ball is sunk, the game is over and the shooter is payed off.
