How do u copyright photos??

I had photos taken by a photographer. How do we get them copyrighted? Does he get the copyright or do I? Thanks

  1. The copyright belongs to the photographer. Unless she / he signs over the rights to you. All he has to do is print his name on the back of the print with a copyright symbol.


  2. When an image is created, the copyright automatically belongs to the creator.  If they want to register it, they have to send a copy of the work to the Copyright Office along with the form and fee.  But whether or not they register it, it still belongs to the creator.

    You have nothing to do with the copyright as a model or client.  He can sell you rights to use them in certain ways, but all other rights are reserved by the creator.

  3. It belongs to t he creator unless it was a for hire work. Meaning that the artist created it for someone for a fee with the understanding that the copyrights belonged to the client. This is discussed up front before any images are taken, contracts are a good thing for this. Otherwise, the photographer owns the rights to them...
