  1. First make sure you have a good coach as this will help you have the horse in the corect state of mind to perform the movement.  Make sure you have a good conection with the canter, and have control of the langth of pace and colection of the quaters.  Its important to have a balanced counter canter before the horse is introduced to the movement to prevent problems down the track.  When making the transtion its best to bring his canter alittle shorter making sure you are riding from his quaters.  Take your inside leg alittle back, and close ur inside rain for aprox 3 strides.  Gently bend him around your new inside leg and help lift him into the new lead (it helps to lead alittle with ur inside hip slightly).  It is important it keep your new inside rain soft as this will alow the horse the freedom to take the new lead.  Hope this helps

  2. yes, inside rein, outside leg.

When you're cantering one direction, change the direction across the diagonal and let your horse go a little more onward as you take that long line across the diagonal because it will help him switch leads if he already has some compulsion.  When you get about in the center of the arena, put your new outside leg on and when you're ready for the change, then use the inside rein... it kinda helps if you lift the inside rein up instead of just pulling it back... it opens up the inside shoulder to allow the horse to shift his weight over onto that shoulder and leg.

For a really trained and experienced horse you can sometimes just shift your weight onto the outside stirrup and he will switch which makes it really easy to change leads, but not all horses know that method of lead change.

  3. You are correct!!  Inside NECK rein, and outside leg.. gently.
