How do u do the "pop-up" in surfing?

i can catch any wave but i have trouble when it comes to standing up..im having trouble going from my stomach to feet in one motion..i usually always end up on my knees with the wave already on top of me. i could use some help.

  1. Practice on land first, build your upper body.  Do some pull ups and work on your core.  Pilates help with core strength.  The trick to popping up is you need to bring your upper body up at the same time with your arms and torso in one fluid motion.  Just practice on land with your board.  After you perfect the popping up part then just charge ahead on waves with your eyes forward while keeping your torso low.


  2. To repeat everyone else, practice on land before you get in the water. You can do this at your house, on your board in the sand..

    Place your hands on the board directly under your shoulders. Not in front, by your head or lower, towards your waist. Work on doing it in one swift motion. Some people try to find their balance and go slow so they don't fall, but end up taking too long and miss the wave. You aren't going to feel any more balanced; just pop up and then work on staying up.

    Make sure that you paddle hard so that the wave will carry you. Don't stop paddling too soon. When you feel the wave pushing you, place your hands down and push up, swinging yours knees up under your body. Try to not get in the habit of getting to your knees first, because when you start riding steeper waves you are going to need to get up as fast as possible. Place your front leg right under your body. You can have your back leg more or less "slide up" if that helps. Stay low, don't try to stand straight up because you probably will lose your balance. Crotch down and bend your knees. Make sure you are centered over the board, not too much to one side or the other or you will tip and fall. Even when you start to pick it up, keep practicing on land until you master it and can stand up in one quick motion.

    Remember, don't get into the habit of getting on your knees then standing up. Swing your legs under you and try to stay up as long as possible. Good luck!

  4. Do you have good upper and lower body strength? Practice on land. You actually hop up by putting your weight momentarily forward onto your arms.

    P.S. I just made that all up. Not only have I never surfed, I have never actualy even seen an ocean. Good Luck!!!

  5. Practice, practice, practice.  And practice on land without the movement of the wave to affect your balance.   Keep trying it will pay off.
