  1. If it is very old the glue will be degraded and you can just start peeling away the paper. This will leave a yellow, powdery residue. This can washed off with household cleaners in most cases. otherwise...

    If you want to save the paneling:

    A heat gun, plastic putty knife, and patience. Go slow, get the contact glue gummy and peel back the contact paper. Be careful not to overheat any one area, you could scorch the paneling, or set the edge of the paper on fire. The knife will help get a corner started and then clear away the gummy residue. Afterward you'll have strip what's left of the gum, either with a household cleaner, or with a chemical agent.

    If you don't want to save the paneling:

    An utility knife and a crowbar. Pry the paneling away from the wall and use the utility knife to cut the seams between pieces.
