  1. Can't stand it. Don't like talking to a bunch of people.

Actually, I really don't mind talking to them - if they all didn't have to look at me while I'm doing it.

  2. Speaking in public brings 3 responsibilities.

    1) TO INFORM: The people in attendance are there to learn something new. They are taking their personal time to be there. It is your task to teach them what they didn't know, but should.

The only way you can do this is to completely know the subject. Details are most important. The way to a great speech is research, preparation and practice.

    2) TO INSPIRE: You should have a goal.  Usually that goal is to motivate people to take an action. Or to give them information they can use in their lives. You must have PASSION !  People respond to passionate speakers.

    3) TO ENTERTAIN:  It is very hard to inform or inspire if the audience is sleeping.  You must keep them awake with your passion but in away that keeps them wanting more. They should not know what your going to say or do next.

Props or media can help in this but it is as much of HOW you speak as what you say.

I wanted to add: (as some folks above have)   HAVE FUN!!! If you know your subject well enough to NOT use notes you will enjoy it much more and so will your listeners..

  3. I used to be very nervous at first. I would go way too fast. Later on when I was doing like my 3rd speech, I didn't care. I got an A on that last speech. :] So, I guess if theirs people I know in the crowd then I would do fine. But, if their are no people I know then I might feel nervous.

  4. it really just depended on who was watching me really. i wasn't that nervous. at first i was horrified going up. but just think of it this way. there to worried them selves to even pay attention. hope it all goes well

  5. Nervous, but thats only me i know you could do better. Last year i made a speech in front of the whole school. And won first place=)

    Good Luck!!

  6. If your doing public speaking, first try not to be nervous(rehearse your speech until you are confident enough)

Then get people to listen to your speech and get peers to critique you to see if your speech clearly communicates the topic strongly( If not try to rewrite, and delete parts that may be hard to follow or not supportive to the speech)

Make sure if you have notes that you can using to look up at the audience and not have your eyes glued to the notes. If the speech is memorized then this is not a problem.

After this be sure to add movement(if it is allowed) in the speak such as walking around points, hand gestures, etc

If you follow these it is impossible not to have a pretty decent speech.

  7. LOVED IT!

It helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. What I did is turning the fear into excitement.

The way that i hide my fear too is my smiling; people cant read you that way.

I did not use my notes because sometimes you depend too much of it and loose the eye contact with the public.(something that teachers grade greatly)

    Good Luck!

  8. Public speaking sucks, if you like it then of course get a job with public relations.

Some people tune everyone out or focus on a nuetral item, helps calm the nerves of a crowd.

Gosh I hated standing up in front of the class.

  9. i feel the same way about busting a nut

  10. I can talk to people, but I can't talk to people sitting all around me and staring intentively. I get nervous, and my stomach feels disgusting. I worry about messing up and making a bad impression or getting laughed at by everyone. I think nervousness is a self-esteem issue that needs to be worked out. Self-esteem plays a big part in being able to speak in front of a big crowd of people.

  11. i cant stand it because i always get tongue tied and start to stumble. Then i always get hot and sweaty.

  12. i dread public speaking more then anything else. I am suppose to get up there to talk about a certain topic but i end up feeling like a side show if i dont have all my facts down. Too much attention but i got to do it

  13. I would like public speaking if:

    a. I knew some people in the audience

    b. I'd never have to see anybody in the audience again

  14. Writing an essay about public speaking? My first speech in public speaking class was one of the most difficult things I've ever done. My last name (before I married) began with Y. The teacher announced that she was going to do things a little differently, and intead of starting as usual with the beginning of the alphabet, she would start at the end. It was sheet torture. I said something that was supposed to be presentation of a fact, but the class thought it was funny, and laughed heartily. I nearly melted on the spot.
