If it runs through the wash programme without turning,then it usually is the motor brushes,if it is a fairly old machine.

I figure out what is wrong with it based on my understanding of how it works.  Like if it doesn't fill then it could be the solenoid or the device that signals the solenoid to open.  If it doesn't spin then it could be a belt, the motor or the timer.  I use a multimeter to run various test on the circuits and components that I feel are appropriate based on my previous operating evaluation.  Usually there is a wiring diagram on the back panel and I get an exploded view of the machine from the manufacturer's website to ad in part identification and assembly/ disassemble sequences.

Once I have determined the problem I can order parts from the www.partstore.com or a local place.

You can do all of these things if you want to learn.  If you don't know what some of the basic parts of a washing machine are then it will just take longer.

I found a book on amazon for you that may help.  I have not read it.

U fix a W/M by first finding out whats wrong with it. Maybe if you explain the problem with your appliance you will get some useful answers?!
