I have had my two female rats now for a few months and there cage smells terrible i clean it out everyday and give them baths every other week. But an hour or so after i clean it, it just smells again. i also bath them about every 2 weeks. i tried litter trainning them and they toke right to it but when we went on vacation for 2 weeks and left them with a friend they stopped using it and now a they just dump the litter every where and go where ever they please is there any way to re teach them to use because that may cut back the smell.

  1. cleaning it out everyday is a bit much, i recommend once a week, thoroughly cleaning everything that can be washed with warm water and disinfectant (animal friendly of course). urine on plastic can be wiped up daily though.

there is a special bedding you can get which stops the cage smelling a lot http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-...

  2. Whenever you think it smells, first, you take everything out. Take it apart and clean everything with soap and water. (even the toys) Then, you put it all back together and put fresh , what is it called?, the stuff that goes on the bottom, and if it still doesn't smell good, don't be spraying any febreeze in it. it could hurt the rat. Just make sure you did everything, and maybe even do it again until it is gone.

  3. Get rid of the rats

  4. Buy odor remover at petsmart

  5. you could actually get a non-toxic spray for your rodents from pet stores all around, I would recommend getting a spray that you can also use on your pets after baths. after getting the spray, you could spray your cage with it when cleaning.

    good luck!

  6. mix white distilled vinegar with a little water and use an old cloth or sponge to scrub the entire cage & all accessories (plastic igloo/wheel, etc...).

I just trimmed my 3 rats' nails the other day. I got my 13 yr. old sister to hold them up in front of me and she held a spoon with vanilla yogurt to keep them occupied. It takes patients & you have to be very careful and only cut the very tip of their nails. If they won't stay still, try again later.

  7. well keep cleaning the cage i litter trained my rats helps a lot

  8. Maybe try putting some Arm and Hammer Baking Soda in the cage, I don't know if it will work, but I'd give it a try.
