i've checked afs and idtech. i want to go to spain during the summer. but i can't convince my parents to let me go. money and the fact that i'll be half way around the world is a big factor in this too.

  1. Explain how much you have looked into this, and how much it would mean to you. You can also get scholarships in almost any program. And tell your parents how going abroad will help your chances at colleges. Colleges want diversed and cultured students.

  2. Offer to pay for most of the trip. Promise you'll write, call, email, etc. every day or however often, and remind them that you'll be staying with a family who will take care of you.

  3. Lay out all the pros to them (you will learn a lot, it will be a life-changing experience, etc., whatever you think is true).  Let them come up with the cons, and try to make your argument better.  Explain to them the programs you have looked at, and try and cover any issues they have about safety.  I would also suggest offering to pay for as much of it as possible, and asking other family members (grandparents? uncles?) if they would be willing to pitch in.   Good luck!  Exchange programs are amazing, and Spain is a fantastic country!
