Here in Cali, Regular unleaded is $4.59/ga. I drive 60 miles round trip to work everyday. Now I'm starting to do my best to save gas. (not using air con much, drive slower, proper tire pressure, new air filter, etc)

Do you know or have any other trick to get more MPG out of your car??

  1. Sell your car and take the bus?

Air conditioning is the No.1 gas guzzler, tire pressure is probably No.2  that most people neglect.  Other than keeping the car in tune, you could spend a small fortune trying to finesse mileage out of your car and won't see much difference.  Your power to weight ratio is fixed, so unless you start stripping doors off... then you'll increase drag of course.

Coasting doesn't work.  Your engine will be most efficient cruising at constant power of about 60%.  What is 60%? Your guess is as good as any, it depends on the car.  55-60mph is a good start as most autos were built to be most efficient at that speed.  At any rate, try driving at a more constant rate during that commute, avoid slowing and acceleration.  It's always fun to watch people rush up only to have to slam their brakes on over and over again, meanwhile I cruise slow and never touch my brakes.

BTW, if everyone drove this way, not only would fuel consumption go down, but we'd have less stop and go traffic.  But hey, people make stupid pets.

  3. There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

    (1) spark plugs

    (2) spark plug wires

    (3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

    (4) new air filter

    (5) PCV

    (6) correct tire pressure

    (7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

    (8) spray clean MAF sensor.

Forget all those "SAVE GAS" scams.  This was on NBC morning TV show.   The difference is as much as 38% (their claim).  There are very simple rules to save gas:

    (1) drive slow - not too much past 55

    (2) accelerate slowly

    (3) don't brake unnecessarily

    (4) use cruise control - whenever it is safe to do so.

Don't coast - it is NOT safe (to coast in Nuetral) and it does NOT save gas.  It only saves gas, if you are planning to slow down (exiting, tolls, traffic).  Coasting then accelerating again is LESS efficient than just cruising.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic).  That's 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles).  Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

    WOW !!

    Good Luck....

P.S.  filling your tires with nitrogen make no difference.  You have to unload about 100 pound to improve about 1 MPG.  There's not even 1/100 of 1 pound of air in your tire.  That just sheer ignorance talking.

  5. It sounds like you are doing the best you can.  Keeping your car tuned up(spark plugs, air filter, etc), tires inflated good.

Depending on how new your car is, the AC probably affect too much at highway speeds, just in stop/start traffic.

One thing to read is now you can fill your tires with nitrogen instead of oxygen.  This is suppose to make them slightly lighter, and stay inflated longer due to the larger size molecules of nitrogen? look into it.

I have been hearing of more and more people just move closer to their work, 60 miles a day seems a bit much.  If you are commuting into a city, there are probably ride-shares or carpools you could search for online.

If anything, find people who work similar hours, and share gas expenses.

    good luck

  6. Make your car lighter!

Take out the spare tire and replace it with a can of fix-a-flat.

  7. Add 2 ounces of pure acetone for every 10 gallons of gasoline. The acetone breaks down fuel molecules to a finer mist when injected into the cylinders. I have seen an average of 10% to 20% increase fuel mileage using this trick. Acetone is not EPA approved for fuel so if there are sniffers in your area be careful.

  8. You could learn to coast, as in gas it for a bit and let the car just coast for awhile and repeat. Problem being, you are probably usually stuck in traffic when commuting.
