  1. Try it out in person before you buy.  If you have a guitar teacher, get them to try it first before you buy.  They'll be able to tell you if it is any good.  I wouldn't buy an instrument without being able to try it out in person first.

  2. As the other dude said, definitely don;t buy it 'cold'...you gotta check it out in person first...and considering you seem a little unsure about what to look for, I would definitely suggest taking along somebody who knows what to look for...There could be all kinds of problems that may otherwise go un-noticed, and cause problems down the track....Overall, you're looking for:

    * sound/tonal quality....Does it sound good? Are the notes it produces accurate? If not, there may be some structural issues...

    * check up the neck, make sure the neck is nice and straight, no bowing, warps or anything....

    * Check the frets....if the fret wires are worn-down it may cost a bit to get the neck re-fretted....

    * Action - you'll want something with a nice low action - i.e. the strings set close to the fretboard...paying a bit before you buy can determine this - are they too high or low?

    * The Guitar's parts....make sure everything works - pegs etc...

    * also important, is the actual feel - make sure you are comfortable with it...

    GOOD LUCK!
