  1. they get bigger just like women do you'll know

  2. They get bigger, they get mammory development, they build nests, they change in behavour. Also you can get a blood test at the vets to see, and further down the line an ultrasound

  3. Signs of Pregnancy

Dogs give signs, shortly after breeding to let you know that they are pregnant.

    Yours will too.

    1. Her v***a will remain slightly swollen after her heat ends.

    2. Her teats ( nipples ) will be more pronounced.

    3. You may notice a big change in her temperament. She may get quieter or lazy or more loving. She may continue to be the way she was before.

    4. 2 weeks after breeding, but also throughout pregnancy, she may experience morning sickness. It can last a week or so. Give her saltene crackers before she gets out of bed and a few throughout the day

By now you know she is pregnant.

Your vet has to wait until day 28-32 of her pregnancy, to palpate the abdomen.

To do this lay your dog on her side, slide one palm beneath her and your other palm over her other side, just below her ribs. Gently squeeze your palms together and feel for little golf balls, these are puppies. If you become good at this, you will be able to count the puppies.

    5. In the 4th week you may notice thickening of her sides, between her ribs and hip bone. You can also have your vet do a scan at this stage to confirm the pregnancy. The vet can usually confirm to you how many pups she is carrying but this is often not completely accurate.

    6. She may start to show any time after 5 weeks. Larger breeds may carry the pups up in their rib cage so it might not be so easy to notice.

    7. Most dogs show at 6-7 weeks. You may notice a normal discharge somewhere in the last couple of weeks. The discharge is clear and has the consistency of thick vaseline and is oderless. If you notice a discharge that is green or bloody and fowl smelling seek a vet.

    8. In the 8th week you can feel the puppies kick and turn around.

  4. If she's not spayed and comes in heat, male dogs tie with her, her tummy starts getting bigger, and milk starts producing in her nipples.

  5. when your dog misses the period take her to the vet and they will tell you.

  6. Dogs dont have "periods" they come into heat!  A missed heat cycle is no indication of a pregnancy in dogs.. here's why.

Dogs go into estrus, when they bleed, they are fertile and the body is ready for pregnancy.  They ovulate during this time.  Dogs cycle every 6 months.  If a dog got pregnant, then she will have puppies 2 months later (at least 4 months before her next heat cycle!).  As you can see, if she has a missed heat cycle, it wouldnt be from a pregnancy!

Humans ovulate about 2 weeks or so before their menstual cycle, and when conception does not occour, a period, or menses happens to "flush" the system out and start the cycle over again.  If a pregnancy occours, then there's no need for menses.

Dogs bleed to prepare the body for a pregnancy, Humans bleed because a pregnancy did not occour.

Dogs can display pregnancy symptoms after a heat cycle, even if not pregnant.  Its called a false, or phantom, pregnancy.  You cannot rely on symptoms alone.  The vet can determine a pregnancy from palpitating her abdomen or with an ultrasound.
