  1. I really would get a professional saddler to come and measure your horse. The saddle needs to fit right in order for the horse to perform comfortably. You dont want a saddle that you've paid alot of money for to then rub your horse and cause him discomfort. This could lead to all sorts of problems.

Ask your local tack store for a fitting. It'll be worth it! Good Luck.

  2. Typically when it comes to a western saddle, you're looking at a semi quarter horse tree for most TBs and running type QHs.  Full quarter trees are for really wide QHs with REALLY flat, almost muttony withers.

As for English, normally a wide tree works with huntseat all purpose saddles for most TBs and QHs.

As for measuring yourself for your saddle, take a measuring tape and measure from you knee to your hip and that will give you the English seat size for a huntseat or dressage type saddle.  Deduct about 2" from that size for a western saddle.

To measure the seat size on an English saddle, start at the round saddle nail head on the side of the pommel, then take your measuring tape to the middle of the cantle.

For a Western saddle, start at the base of the neck of the horn and STRAIGHT back to the cantle starts.

For reins:  Western 7' split reins work well, and standard laced hunt reins would work well for you.

Girth/cinch:  48" girth would work well for most TBs and QHs for English.  32" cinch for Western.

  3. size doesn't have to do with the horse, it has to do with the rider. from the front of your saddle to the back of your saddle, you measure in inches and thats the size....thats not a great explanation but its kind of hard to explain. the TREE should probably be a regular, which is the part that sits on their back. and you just measure the girth area with a tape measure.

    I hope this helps!

  4. the size of gurth depends on how deep your horses gurth line is!
