How do u know when the piston ring and piston need changing on a off road bike.?

A compression test is the best way to tell. On a 4 cycle engine if the compression is low, squirt a small quantity of oil in the cylinder and test again.  If the compression comes up, your rings are weak, if it remains low you have a vale leaking or bad head gasket.

I would totally agree with "kevusaborn's" answer but also add you will hear the rattle that signifies piston slap if the rings are badly worn.

Compression loss is a a fair sign as is oil consumption. If you re blowing black smoke esp on starting and the compressing is weak and you have this epiphany about frequency of oil change (seldom to never) your rings are shot and a top O'haul is in order. If you have low compression it is either the valve seats or the rings. Add a tbs of motor oil in the spark plug hole, replace plug, and test again. If compression comes up its the rings. If compression remains low its the valves.

Either it won't run or will run, smoke like a chimney & have absolutely no power. Should have very little compression against the kick starter.

If you begin to see extra smoke coming out the exhaust,

  If you begin to see a power loss...

  If you see an abnormal amount of metal shavings in you oil filter.

  There are a lot of variables but that's just a few.
