How do u make a baby calm when its upset?

2 weeks ago my sisters boyfriends son (but the son is not my sisters) was freaking out cause i wouldnt let him have a lollipop b4 dinner and i was by myself with him so i tried 2 pick him up but he wouldn't let me so i tried 2 make him laugh but that didnt work either so i just gave him wat he wanted and didnt tell anyone so the next time this happens how can i make him shutup o and the babys 20 months

Tantrums escalate because people constantly give in and the child learns this all too well.  For example he had a fit, you paid attention to it and eventually gave him what he wanted.  Now, next time he will carry on even longer because he knows he will eventually get what he wants.  Don't try to console him at all, tell him no and ignore the fit, I know it's hard to do.  I have a 9 year old "challenging" child who did this A LOT when he was younger and I always gave in.  A behavior therapist told me to ignore the fit and eventually it would get better.  Children don't know the difference between good and bad attention they only know that you are paying attention to them so if you completely ignore there fit eventually they will learn that it's not going to work and will not bother.  I only took 3 or 4 times and my sons tantrums literally almost stopped!  Good luck cause I know all too well it's easier said than done.

Sounds like he was just tired or hungry maybe wanted some loving or had a pain somewhere and can't communicate good.  Don't give in and just act like you can't hear him if it is just a tantrum.  When he keeps on, sing as loud as you can and look at him and be goofy. Usually they are so stunned by this, they stop and watch with curiosity for so long and then they forget about whatever they want like candy.

well your first mistake was giving in.  You have to persistent.  Continue to tell him NO and try to distract him with something else.  Children will eventually calm them selves down if nothing else seems to work.
