  1. It's just sugar and water. You don't want it too sugary though or it makes your feeder gross. Usually 1 part sugar to 4 parts water is fine.

  2. Sorry, but the above answers are false. Sure, the Hummingbirds will drink it but it has no nutritional value. Check out the ingredients next time you're at Wal Mart.

If a Hummingbird's only source of food is sugar water it will die.

  3. 2 parts sugar to 1 part water.  You can add vegetable food coloring but it isn't necessary.  Be sure to clean the feeder at least once a week.

  4. It's sugar water!

At the conservation district, we make about a qt. at a time, and it's all water with 1cup of sugar. But the ratio of sugar to water wouldn't really matter. Their may be other recipes with "healthier" ingredients, but this is the way I was taught while I worked for wildlife rehab.

  5. It IS 1 part sugar, 4 parts water.  Put in a shaded spot so it does not spoil quickly.  No need to add food coloring..the feeder itself should be enough to attract the birds.  Tim..who said anything about hummingbirds ONLY eating nectar..nectar actually only makes up a small part of their diet..they mainly eat insects.  But eating from a hummingbird feeder does not harm them in any way.
