  1. The second verb in a sentence has the 'infinitive' to ensure.

I try to ensure that my children drink enough milk.

"to ensuring" is never used in English.  "Ensuring" is a gerund or used in the present continuous verb tense:

Ensuring your children drink milk is a healthy idea.

By providing milk with every meal, I am ensuring that my children will have strong bones and teeth.

  2. Correct on the verb usage. 'To' indicates that the following verb is infinitive.

It will not have an 'ing' (gerund form aka present participle).

Incidentally, take care with the verb insure and ensure. As the previous poster made clear, they are two often confused verbs.

To ensure is to make sure.

To insure is to provide/secure some type of insurance.

You would ensure that your children get enough milk, but you would be hard pressed to get even Lloyd's of London to insure that.

Also in the mix is 'assure', but I'm sure you don't need things overly complicated... hehe.

  3. Yep, it's in the infinitive as a verb.

"To ensure this is done, we . . . "

"Tomorrow, I need to paint the ceiling . . ."

"I'm going to call my friend."

  4. You would say ensuring or to ensure. For instance: His father would pick them up after the movie to ensure that they would get home safely. OR  His father would pick them up after the movie, ensuring that they would get home safely.

I'd reiterate the above poster's caution about ensure / insure. Though people seem to treat the two words as interchangeable, like enquire / inquire a matter of preference, they are two different words with different meanings.
