  1. You begin by being a good leader yourself and setting the pace.

You will only gain credibility and respect by proving that you are able to do what you are expecting of others.

No point in talking the talk you have to walk the walk !

Continue by being prepared to listen and offer support.

    Encourage, support and praise.

    Good luck

  2. One MUST be a great communicator to begin with and be able to see problems B 4 they begin.  Thinking is the beggining of getting to know others.  If one is that type person than it comes easy.  These things are almost impossible to teach.  Your ability to get along with anybody is imperative in this situation.

  3. If it's important enough, start by identifying the 'alpha male/female' (or Team Leader, if one has been appointed) .. make 'suggestions' to him/her (so he/she can claim credit) .. when he/she is promoted to higher things, they will remember your assistance and promote you behind them (so they can continue to benefit).

If you want to be 'Team Leader', wait for 'higher management'  to ask for ideas .. make sure you put yours forward but don't force it .. better is for other ideas to be tested and fail - that way your (untested) idea can be seen as an 'alternative that would have worked' .. (on the other hand, don't be too wimpish or others may see you as 'not Management material') -

NB. it seems that in most Companies it is OK to sabotage the current Team Leader efforts, so long as it is done in the name of 'helping to resolve the situation' or 'recovering from failure' (I saw this all the time at the last place I worked .. and higher management even handed out promotions to people whose sabotage efforts actually cost the company money and customers). It is also OK to do nothing so long as you produce enough paper-work that LOOKS as if you are doing something.

(I left my last job in disgust when, after working unpaid overtime for a year to successfully bring in my Project, I was passed over for a 'Management Trainee' who had spent the year doing nothing but Project  Plans, Budgets and nice power-point presentations saying why HIS project was not progressing due to 'lack of resources' (the only resource assigned being HIM) - when I kicked up a fuss I was told 'you failed to report progress as required' = the fact that I had completed the project was not seen as relevant .. a lesson I learnt well (I am now a manager, so now I too need only generate the required paper work .. and I've got scripts to do that for me :-) )
