If it's normal ruse and not too bad then spray it with over cleaner.....let it sit then cover it with sand. Get out there and do the boogy dance over it and the sand will act as a mega-abrasive and clean it really well. It's sounds retarded and your neighbors might think you are a little crazy but it works really well! I clean mine this way. Just rub the sand over the grate (using shoes of coarse) then rinse and there you go!

Take it to a self serve car wash - use degreaser and the brush or bring a wire brush with you to scrape off the residues.

This eliminates the crud and chemicals in your yard and is easier! The high pressure water does wonders!

Put oven cleaner on it and put it in a large garbage bag a for a few hours to keep the oven cleaner from drying out. Wash off the oven cleaner and use a wire brush or steel wool to get any residue that is left.

Depends on how bad the rust really is.  I would try using steal wool first and see where that gets you.. You can always sand it and use a steal brush to get rid of the rest than paint it.. However if its just the Grill part of the grill that is rusted, use the steal wool. or  you can buy replacements pretty cheap
