How do u tell the difference between spit up and throw up in a baby?

hi my daughter just woke from nap and i was holding her and she coughed twice and on second cough made like a bla sound and it went all over me not sure if it was spit up or throw up then a few minutes later did it again but didn't cough that time. she is a little over 6months old.

  1. If I were you I would base it on what your child normally does.  Does she normally spit up?  What does it look like?  If she doesn't usually spit up, it could likely be vomit, but remember that kids may vomit for lots of reasons.  When my daughter throws up, it is more "projectile" than spit up.  There is usually lots of it (whatever her last meal/bottle amount was) and if I'm holding her I can feel her stomach heave.  My daughter is 6 months old, but all babies are different.


  2. Little bit of milk coming up and over the lip, spit up. Projectile...throw up.     Sounds like you may be feeding her too much or the formula is not agreeing with her.  

  3. spit up is liquid

    vomit looks like cottage cheese...it has chunks and looks curdy.
