Well I don't really know how but our teacher (yes our teacher made the girls AND BOYS watch a videos about periods) said that pads ARE MUCH better because someone died at our school using tampons.

Try it with a slender size or one meant for light days first as these are smaller and are easier to maneuver when you're learning.

As for the safety of tampons, dying from using a tampon is very, very, rare. Your risk increases using tampons over pads, but safe tampon use minimizes this risk. The website at the beginning of this post also has safety guidelines.
