Question:

How do vegans feel about produce grown using cow manure as a fertilizer?

I am considering building a greenhouse and growing produce to sell as organic. I want to use the cow manure from a locally owned organic dairy farm. This way, I know my produce is truly organic.

So my question is, is it acceptable for vegans to consume produce that has been grown using manure? I am a vegetarian, so I have no idea how strict vegans are about things.

Any input would be so helpful, thanks!

  1. i would think so, because farmers didnt force the cows to p**p. lmao

  2. Yes it is, you are not exploiting an animal by using it's waste.

  3. While cow manure is a by product of the meat or dairy industry, its highly unlikely any farmer would keep cattle just to sell or give away the manure.

by using the manure you are not "supporting" the meat industry.

If you want to avoid products as removed from the meat chain as manure, you'd have a hard time explaiing how other animal by-products are used.

Avoid the obvious ones, some not so obvious ones are impossible to avoid.

eg, most steel cutlery is punched in presses lubricated with tallow. You cannot avoid animal products if you live in the 21st century.

by the way, many organic farms are moving from manure to using "cover crops" you might want to look at that for future years. We're planting winter clover after barley this year and will test the soil in the spring to ensure the nutriants are produced by ploughing in the clover. Rumour has it that it works just fine.

  4. It's a gray area. It's clearly an animal product and it does indeed support the meat industry in the same way the products using rendered animal parts support the meat industry. The meat industry is paid for both the manure and the leftover carcasses.

On paper, it looks as though that would be non-vegan since there are alternatives.
