Question:

How do vegans get calcium naturally?

because they dont drink milk...

i am concidering going vegan but i am concerned with osteoperosis. Any help would be appriciated!

  1. Calcium is a mineral/element. It cannot be created or destroyed. It can be found anywhere on the planet in living organisms and the soil.

    Cows don't create calcium and culture that consume the most dairy have the highest rates of osteoporosis.

  2. It's great that you're interested in going vegan! Good vegan sources of calcium include almonds, black beans, broccoli, collard greens, great northern beans, kale, kidney beans, mustard greens, navy beans, orange juice, pinto beans, sesame seeds, soybeans, soymilk, and tofu.

  3. Calcium is not problem as long as you eat enough and eat variety of foods.

    You must concern more on vitamin B12.

    The Vegan Society, the Vegetarian Resource Group, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, among others, recommend that vegans either consistently eat foods fortified with B-12 or take a daily or weekly B-12 supplement.

    I am 14 and I am vegan. I was firstly a vegetarian and when I decided to go vegan my family were saying to me to turn vegetarian again cause I need milk especially now that my body is still being developed. So, I was sick of them, and that's why I did my research.

    Taking it from just a healthy point of view and not a vegan point of you, cow milk is not really healthy for you. This shocks people and I was shocked when I found out. Actually it is not really unhealthy, yet again, it does not help to avoid osteoporosis. That is a myth. Yes, it is true that cow milk does have a lot of calcium which helps the bones, yet again, the cow milk is designed for the cows. I am not talking for caring about the animals but even scientifically, cow milk is for the young cows. Let me explain.

    Call it God or call it science, something created everything in the world. Everything was designed. When we follow our nature, we tend to be healthy and, when we don't, we are not healthy. You see, cow milk was designed for cows. The human organism was not designed to accept cow milk. Cutting down cow milk and taking calcium from other natural substances will make you much more healthy. It is a fact that we do need calcium. However, getting it from the cow milk just makes our organism going against its nature. Also, eating any kind of meat (including fish) is against our nature. One will say that the first people on the world killed animals to eat food so why shouldn't we? So you see how those people stayed a bunch of thousands years behind from evolution.

    You can get calcium from many organic products such as green-leaf vegetables and soy/rice/almond milk. Personally, I am not really a fan of plain soy or rice milk but I am  a huge fan of soy. You can use soy to replace any meal that was made by meat. For example, you want lasagna? Get your soy milk cheese and the soy seeds and there you go. Want pizza? Get your soy milk cheese. Want chocolate? Want ice-cream? Anything.

    Then, there is also tofu. Tofu is made by soy milk too. Tofu was founded in China by the way. So, anyway, Tofu is simply the soy milk taken and been processed to make some kind of "cubes" of food. That is Tofu. You can get it from the market.

    Tofu on its own has very little (if not at all) taste. That is why it can be used in both sweet dishes or sour dishes. It is mostly used though to replace chicken and meat.

    For example, you want your thanksgiving turkey? Get tofu and make it. :)

    So, to sum up, leafy-green vegetables, soy and tofu are great calcium and iron providers for you which are organic and not against the human nature. There is also tahini if you know it which is very tasty and has a lot of calcium.

    Also, you might be amazed, but go at your local market and check all the vegetarian products. Like veg-burgers, veg-nuggets etc... You will be shocked by how much calcium and iron they have!

    Please note that there is still the B12 vitamin which you need but I'm not really sure from which veggies you can get it, sorry. However, most vitamins are from the leafy-green vegetables. I am not a big fan of them so I take a spoon of a multi-vitamin "medicine" every day. You can get it from your local chemist's and you can even get flavors! Mine is orange and is like a very sweet orange juice or something.

  8. There are many foods high in calcium naturally or have had calcium added. Tofu, orange juice, soy and rice milk, and yogurts all have brands with calcium added. Greens (collard, turnip, mustard) have high amounts of calcium as do molasses, kale, bok choy, okra, broccoli, and almonds. Just have to eat a large variety of foods to stay healthy on a vegan diet.

  9. Drinking milk isn't exactly natural.  Natural calcium comes from green leafy vegetables.

  10. I drink Rice Dream Rice Milk.  I get it at the health food store.  It is delicious and gives me all the calcium I need.

    Calcium pectate is the main component of the middle layer of plant cell walls. So all plants are a source of calcium, but some sources like spinach have things like oxalic acid that interfere with calcium absorption.
