I mean, how do artists make money, if they are not famous, or just starting out.

Like, if you wanted to sell your artwork to a museum, how would you do that? Do you just walk in with ur masterpiece and ask if they want to buy it or sumthing? (thatd be really unprofessional)

seriously, HOW DO VISUAL ARTISTS MAKE MONEY??

  1. Hi,

    Good answer from Noway.

You should also get a website and you can also post your works at sites like Etsy or Yessi.

    Good luck and work hard.

  2. Artists do shows in small galleries to make a name for themselves before they get their work displayed permanantly in museums.

If you can make a name for yourself in galleries then you usulally get an agent. An agent will try to convince people who buy art that your art is a good investment.

Some painters like Mark Ryden and Robert Williams are very popular and can sell painting (on comission) years before they are even completed.

  3. nelson adkins museum will display an artist only after they are dead 10 years.

  4. Museums typically only buy after an artist has achieved recognition. They are not your first step.

Your first step would be to find a local gallery owner willing to show your stuff, and only take half the purchase price. Even lower down the food chain, you might find coffee houses, libraries, and other art friendly places to display your work (where you can sell at a lower commission rate).

The old standard, of finding a patron who will give you an annual pension, has not worked too well since the early 1800's.
