Question:

How do we costume the show "Little Women" on no budget?

I co-direct a middle school drama club, and we've decided to do the play "Little Women" this year. We have absolutely no budget, though, and I'm a little worried about costuming. I don't believe our little actors are going to have Civil War-era hoop skirts sitting in their closets. For previous shows, the students have costumed themselves, but they're going to need help this time, I think. Any advice on how to create hoop skirts? They won't be available at thrift stores...

  1. Re-watch the movie with Winona Ryder. For most of the regular old at home scenes, plain brown or black skirts with white ladies' button down shirts, and a shawl will do.  Black or brown boots will work, even knee boots, as long as the heel isn't too S****y.  You can just go with lots of petticoats rather than a hoop skirt, which you can make by gathering that netting stuff you can buy at fabric stores and sewing to a slip, or even pinning to a slip or a pair of boxer shorts.  Like, fold it over to make a bubble hem type deal out of it?  Ask any lady who sews.  You could also check out any costume rental places and see if they might give you a deal, or better yet, donate the use of the costumes in exchange for a big add in the program.

  2. Hula Hoops.

Get some large adult size skirts, maybe from 2nd hand clothing stores, or op shops, and then stitch small-medium sized hula-hoops into the rims.

Or use fence wire, a few loops/layers will be stiff enough to get the same effect.

  3. Go to your local library and get some books on costuming.

    Ask the parents for help.

Look on Ebay..you will be surprised that you can find hoop skirts for little money.

Go to Goodwill - you never know what you will find there...

Go to some local bridal stores and ask it they would like would donate anything for an advertisment or acknowledgement in the program.

  4. Fundraisers!!! Get everyone organized as a team and just get ready to raise money! Try bake sales or car washes.... maybe even both! Also go from door to door passing out flyers about your organization that will advertize your fundraiser you could also ask for donations from local businesses. Maybe everyone's parent would like to donate a little cash. Or it would be really helpful if you found a parent who would be willing to help create the clothing. Just don't be afraid to ask for money or ask for people to donate materials!

I wish you the best of luck and I hope I answered your question.
