How do we find out that a company is bona fide and not a scam?

Question

Trying to sell a timeshare, a company has asked us for money on their saying that they have a definite offer of a sale for us. We have a contact number and all semes o.k, but other companies have told us that they are not a reputable firm. Money taken on a credit card who have promised to help if necessary. Just want to find out id the company are good or not.

if you are selling it then why do they want money from you?  that sounds dodgy to me.

Google it or even Trading Standards may be able to help you - good luck

have a look on google for the company and find out if there are any forums to the company, if they are a scam you'll find something to prove it from a search engine
