  1. The number of protons in an atom is written on the periodic table and it is called atomic number.

    For example Carbon has 12 protons, Hydrogen only 1 and Radium  88

    The mass number instead is the number of protons + the number of neutrons found in the nucleus of an isotope.


  2. The number of protons is the element number.

    For example, H is the first element, so it has one proton.  The number of protons a compound has uniquelly defines an element.

  3. the atomic number is the number of both protons and neutrons that an element has.
