How do we keep squirrels from digging in our potted plants?

I am looking for a humane way to discourage squirrels from coming in our yard but not scare birds off

leave peanuts in an area that you don't mind them frequenting.. if they find something better to eat than the roots of your plants, they will likely eat it and leave your plants alone  :)

Get squirrel repelent spray sold at Home Depot

This advice may be a little late in the season, but try laying wire mesh over the top of the pot, and wrapping it down the sides, securing with more wire.  The plants would grow through the holes!
